About this work
The composition looks through an open, chipped doorway into a dark, narrow hallway crowded with coats and objects hanging from hooks and a rack. A small white dog stands just inside the threshold on the wooden floor, its pale coat the brightest note against the surrounding gloom, while switches and a round mirror are visible on the wall at right.
Painted in muted greys, ochres and browns with thick, visible strokes, the scene contrasts the sunlit doorframe with the deep shadow of the interior beyond. The heavy paint on the door jamb and loose, dark brushwork inside the hallway create a shadowy, lived-in, slightly closed-in domestic mood.
