About this work
A patch of striped, blossom-printed wallpaper has been torn away at the center of the panel, its curling yellowed edges exposing a round metal fitting - an old switch or socket base - set into the wall beneath. The surrounding paper, patterned with the same pale-green stripes and small pink flowers as the untorn field, remains intact, framing the ragged opening.
Warm ochre and brown tones of the exposed patch and metal disc contrast with the cool sage greens and soft pinks of the wallpaper. Careful shading along the torn flaps and the fitting's beveled rim creates a convincing illusion of depth and peeling paper. The trompe-l'oeil precision and close, symmetrical framing give the image a quiet, faintly unsettling stillness, as if uncovering something long hidden.
