About this work
Leafless dark tree trunks and tangled branches cross the foreground, opening onto a rambling wooden building with a rusted, moss-streaked roof and several small pointed turrets. The ground is thick with fallen brown and orange leaves and dry grass, while a few birches to the right still hold yellow foliage.
A muted palette of browns, greys and rust dominates, set against a pale, overcast sky, with the turret roofs picked out in warm ochre and copper tones. Textured, dry brushwork in the foliage and grass contrasts with the softer, hazy rendering of the house, giving the scene a damp, quiet late-autumn mood.
