About this work
A wide winter field spreads across the lower portion of the canvas, its yellowed grass broken by patches of melting snow and dark furrows. A thin band of bare trees runs along the horizon, and beyond it an immense grey sky, thick with clouds, takes up most of the composition.
The sky is painted in soft, blended greys and blue-greens with loose, cloudy movement, while the field below is built with drier, more broken strokes of ochre, white and dark green. The low horizon and overcast light give the small canvas a quiet, subdued winter mood.
