About this work
A rutted dirt road, still lined with strips of dirty melting snow, curves through the foreground and leads back into a shallow valley of pale green and brown fields. Two bare young trees stand near the middle of the composition, and a dark tree line closes off the low horizon beneath a wide, overcast sky.
The palette is muted throughout - soft greys, pale greens and warm browns - with the sky rendered in smooth, even brushwork that gives way to looser, more textured strokes in the foreground road and grass. The flat light and thawing snow create a subdued, transitional mood, capturing the quiet in-between moment of early spring.
