About this work
The hindquarters and thick, hoofed legs of an enormous beast fill almost the entire sheet, its hide rendered as a mass of cracked, bark-like texture. Wedged into the narrow space beneath its bulk, a small man in a short tunic leans forward, one hand braced against the ground, the other reaching out, a thin rod crossing his back as he strains against the animal's crushing weight.
Coarse lithographic hatching builds the creature's hide into a rippling, almost geological surface, while the man is left comparatively bare and smooth, sharpening the contrast in scale and power. The stark black ground and looming dark mass above give the print a crushing, oppressive weight.
