About this work
An enormous recumbent torso and legs fill the upper part of the composition, with a man in a striped garment seated calmly on the giant's thigh, one hand resting on the knee. Below, at ground level, an enormous head lies face down, eyes shut, dwarfing a small full-length figure who strides across it holding a whip or staff.
Heavy contour lines and dense stippled shading exaggerate the disproportion between the colossal body parts and the tiny walking figure, flattening the scene into a stacked, dreamlike arrangement. Deep black grounds throw the pale, sculptural forms into relief, and the abrupt shifts of scale give the image a violent, unsettling charge.
