About this work
Viewed from behind, a bare-chested man with a bony, sharply defined spine walks forward between two uniformed guards in helmets and buckled gear, one on either shoulder. Ahead of them a plain black door, its frame outlined by a searing halo of light, bears the stencilled number '101'.
The scene is built almost entirely in charcoal blacks with warm yellow-white highlights tracing the man's spine, shoulders and the glowing door frame, the guards reduced to dark, faceless silhouettes. The stark contrast of near-black ground against the radiant doorway gives the sheet a dramatic, foreboding sense of an inevitable, dreaded threshold.
