About this work
A man's head, framed by a mane of thick curling hair and beard, is largely obscured by two raised hands held up beside the face, palms and splayed fingers turned toward the viewer. Only one eye and part of the nose and cheek remain visible between the hair and the raised hand.
The drawing is built entirely from dense, fine cross-hatched lines in graphite, creating rich tonal contrast between the near-black hair and the pale, carefully modeled skin of the hands and face. The linework curves with the form of each finger and curl, giving the image a nervous, textured energy. The gesture of hands pressed to the head reads as tense and unsettled.
