About this work
A face emerges from a rough, unbleached canvas ground, eyes half-closed, dark tousled hair merging into the background, mouth pressed against a deep red apple held close to the lips. The figure's shoulders and jacket are indicated only in a few slashing dark lines, leaving the head and the fruit as the sole points of focus.
Executed almost entirely in chalky whites, grays and blacks, the composition is broken only by the saturated red of the apple, which reads as the single note of color. The paint is scraped and dragged thinly over the visible weave of the canvas, giving the surface a raw, unfinished, almost ghostly texture that suits the withdrawn expression.
