About this work
The composition splits into two registers. Above, a figure in a dark red-lined robe plays a cello at the center of a wooded clearing, encircled by an owl, a leopard, an antelope, a deer, a lion and a coiled snake. Below, dark water holds intertwined serpentine forms, fish, an octopus, a squid, and a floating infant at the center.
Warm ochre and cream fill the upper scene within a broad gold-leaf border with small tile motifs, while the lower zone turns near-black, lit by pale patches of color. Paint is applied thickly, with animal forms simplified into flat, icon-like outlines. The layered symbolism and gilded framing give the work a solemn, mysterious quality.
