About this work
A three-quarter portrait shows a young woman in an elaborate white puffed-sleeve gown with a red laced bodice and gold shell pauldrons, her head crowned by a dark blue drape supporting three silvery fish and a long spear-like rod. In her hand she holds slender black rods hung with small dark weights; to her left crouches a bird-like hybrid creature and to her right coils a green serpentine form.
Warm reds and rust tones frame the figure against a dark ground, while the fish, shells, and gilded accents are rendered with smooth, jewel-like precision. The elaborate, invented costume and creatures give the picture a hallucinatory, folkloric mood, poised between formal portraiture and fantastic allegory.
