About this work
A scarlet coat and a teal coat hang empty from hangers on a red horizontal rail, set against a mottled grey and black wall. A small pale full moon shows in the upper left corner, and a red cup lies tipped over on the floor beneath the rail, its contents apparently spilled.
The scarlet coat is painted in flat, saturated red while the teal coat carries streaks of deep blue-green and a glimpse of a violet lining, both rendered with loose, confident strokes. Cool greys dominate the background, pushing the two bright coats forward like actors on a dark stage. The empty garments and fallen cup lend the scene a tense, theatrical, faintly ominous mood.
