About this work
A shallow stream curves through a rocky gorge, its banks strewn with boulders and framed by bare-branched trees mixed with others still holding autumn foliage. The hillside rises steeply behind, its slopes covered in dry grasses and scattered shrubs, closing the composition without any sky visible except a narrow strip at the top.
Warm ochres, rust and olive greens dominate the palette, softened by a hazy, diffused light that mutes contrasts and blurs the far slope. Thick, textured brushwork builds up the foliage and rocks, giving the ravine a dense, quiet, slightly melancholic autumn atmosphere.
