About this work
Spikes of pink and magenta fireweed crowd the foreground meadow, mixed with grasses and small white flowers, while a single dark fir tree stands at left. Behind the flowers, layered blue-grey mountain ridges recede under a pale, cloud-streaked sky, giving the composition a clear near-to-far progression from bloom to peak.
Thick, textured dabs of magenta, violet and yellow build the flowering foreground, applied with a loaded brush over looser, thinner strokes of blue and green for the distant hills. The contrast between the vivid, tactile flowers and the soft atmospheric mountains creates a lively, sunlit impression of a high mountain meadow.
