About this work
Numerous flamingos in shades of coral, pink and white stand and wade across a shallow lagoon, some bending their necks down to feed while others hold their heads high and alert; smaller wading birds move among the reeds behind them, and one bird flies low across the pale sky above.
Heavy palette-knife impasto builds the birds' coral and rose plumage into thick ridges of paint that vibrate against soft grey-green water and hazy ochre reeds; diffuse, even light flattens the scene into broad color masses, giving the wetland a lively, sun-bleached vibrancy.
