About this work

Deep plow furrows radiate from a low point near the horizon, dark ridges of turned soil alternating with grooves packed with fanning streaks of snow. The furrows fill almost the entire canvas, meeting a flat horizon under a solid band of dark teal-gray sky, with no trees, buildings, or figures interrupting the view.

The palette is reduced to near-monochrome blacks, browns, and grays, broken by white snow and the cool teal strip above. Paint is dragged in bold strokes that follow the furrows' direction, giving the surface a graphic, almost abstract rhythm. The stark contrast and repeating lines produce a bleak, wind-scoured winter mood.
