About this work
An ornate arched gateway rises through the composition, framed by dark, tangled trees and crowned with a niche holding a pale, glowing figure lit as if from within. Below, at the base of the arch, small figures lead a group of horses and a carriage through the illuminated opening, moving from darkness into the light of the passage.
Deep violet, indigo, and near-black greens dominate the upper reaches, punctuated by warm orange and cream flares around the statue and archway, creating a strongly nocturnal, theatrical contrast. The paint is applied in thick, dripping strokes and loose daubs that dissolve architectural detail into pure color and light, giving the scene a mysterious, dreamlike atmosphere.
