About this work
Rows of turned earth curve across the foreground of a wide, open field, leading the eye toward a low ridge lined with autumn-colored shrubs and a dark band of distant trees. A few slender trees with orange and yellow leaves stand at the left edge, while the rest of the composition is given over to sky and gently rolling farmland.
The sky is painted in warm ochre and pale gold with a heavily textured, cloud-like surface, echoed in the muted greens and browns of the land below. Directional strokes trace the furrows of the field, and the low, even light gives the scene a calm, expansive, end-of-day quiet.
