About this work
A dark brown dog is caught mid-roll on its back on an open beach, paws curled in the air and head tipped toward the sand. A thin band of blue-grey sea meets the sky at the top edge, and scattered shells and pebbles dot the pale ground around the animal.
Loose, dark strokes build the dog's twisting body against a dry, pale wash of sand, with quick dabs marking scattered shells. The economical, gestural handling and sudden, tumbling pose give the small study a playful, spontaneous energy.
