About this work
On a sloping green pasture, two dark, shaggy animals graze near a gnarled, weathered tree just beginning to leaf out. Behind them, sparse young trees with pale spring foliage stand along the hillside, giving way to darker wooded slopes and a distant hazy mountain ridge under a pale, clouded sky.
Fresh greens dominate the grassy slope, applied in loose, broken pastel strokes, while the gnarled trunk is rendered in darker grey-brown marks with touches of moss. Soft, diffused light typical of an overcast spring day flattens the distant hills into muted violet-grey tones, giving the scene a calm, pastoral stillness.
