About this work
Sharp, multi-peaked rock formations rise directly from the sea in the middle distance, their grey stone catching warm pink light along the ridges beneath a hazy violet sky. In front stretches a band of deep green water, and the foreground is filled with sunlit grasses, low shrubs and scattered rounded boulders along the shoreline. Two white seagulls glide low over the water on the left.
The palette contrasts cool violet-grey rock and sea against the acid greens and warm ochres of the sunlit shore, built up with thick, textured strokes. Light falls from the side, picking out the rock's edges and the grass tips while leaving the water in shadowed green, producing a quiet, slightly enigmatic stillness.
