About this work
The left panel shows painters' easels scattered through a sunlit forest clearing, one seated figure at work and two more standing among the trees, a black rectangle stamped CENSORED blocking part of a canvas. The right panel is a plain room with a barred window, small paintings and a palette on the wall, and a vase of flowers on a patterned tablecloth, again partly hidden behind a black CENSORED block.
Loose, broken strokes of green and gold render the dappled outdoor light, while warmer ochre and maroon fill the interior; the flat black insert breaks the illusion, giving the diptych a withheld, enigmatic mood.
