About this work
Looking down from an upper-storey vantage point, the painting shows a wide city avenue at night, its pavement crowded with dark silhouettes of pedestrians strolling under a row of streetlamps. Cars move along the roadway, their lights smearing into the wet-looking asphalt, while illuminated shop windows and balconies line the receding street on both sides.
Deep blue-black shadow dominates the composition, pierced by warm points of lamplight and window glow rendered in quick, dabbed strokes of yellow and orange. The perspective plunges steeply toward a vanishing point, and the loose, sketch-like handling captures the flicker and bustle of a city street after dark.
