About this work
Two nude male figures hang against a bare wall, wrists bound above their heads by rope that also wraps one man's torso, their heads bowed and faces hidden. Beside them, large red letters spelling "WOREN" drip down the wall. Below at right, a soldier in a green uniform and cap sits on a bench, chin resting on his hand, looking away.
A muted grey-white ground isolates the pale, carefully modeled bodies from the crude, dripping red lettering and the soldier's murky green uniform. The stark contrast between smooth flesh, harsh text, and slumped human posture creates a bleak, accusatory atmosphere of violence and guilt.
