About this work
Multiple bust-length figures, men and women of varying ages, are arranged in tight rows across the canvas, each caught mid-cry or mid-song with mouth open and head tilted back or forward. The figures overlap in a dense, mosaic-like grid, packed shoulder to shoulder against a shared dark ground.
As in related works, the black background is covered with lines of red cursive Cyrillic text, turning the space around the heads into a field of handwritten verse. Faces are modeled in warm flesh tones with visible brush drag, while the repeated open mouths and crowded framing build a collective, almost choral intensity.
