About this work
A face turned in profile emerges from a tangle of teal and green brushstrokes that stand in for hair or drapery, resting against a tufted red cushion studded with dark buttons in the lower right. To the left, a dark curved shape sweeps across an ochre ground, with a small red-orange triangular form and patches of pale cream breaking up the background.
Paint is built up thickly and dragged with loose, gestural strokes, leaving ridges and scraped passages across the canvas. Vivid teal and green are set against warm ochre, orange-red, and near-black, creating strong color contrasts with little concern for naturalistic modeling. The vigorous, almost improvised handling gives the small canvas an energetic, unsettled charge.
