About this work
Five carp swim together through clear water: two mottled white-orange-black koi close together at center, a solid red-orange koi above them, a dark grey koi marked with black patches, and a plain silvery carp facing the viewer near the bottom. Lily pads, water plants and rounded pebbles on the streambed surround the fish, with faint light beams crossing the water.
The water is built from fluid, wet-on-wet washes of teal, turquoise and deep blue, allowing pigment to bloom and pool for a luminous, underwater glow. The fish are painted with more controlled, layered strokes that pick out scales and fin markings in crisp white, orange, red and black. Bubbles and light spatter dot the surface, giving the scene a lively, buoyant energy.
