About this work
Radiating diagonal scratches and streaked brushwork fan out from a dense pale core at the center of the square canvas, splitting into wing-like lobes of ivory and grey on the left and lower portion. A pale vertical form at the bottom suggests a body or stem beneath the wings, while a heavy dark mass of umber and black pigment occupies the upper right, breaking the symmetry.
The surface is built with thick impasto and sgraffito, scraped and scratched back to reveal underlying layers, producing a restless, weathered texture. Cool greys and warm ochre-brown tones collide across the canvas, lit as if from within the pale center, giving the piece an enigmatic, wintry glow and a mood of quiet unease.
