About this work
Fine pen lines outline a stone-pillared footbridge with a decorative iron railing arching over a pond or canal. Two standing figures lean against the railing at the crest of the bridge, one facing forward and one turned away, while the water below is suggested with loose horizontal strokes.
The drawing is worked mainly in black ink line over a diffuse wash of grey and pale blue that bleeds outward into the untouched paper, leaving soft, cloud-like edges. This economy of line and wash, with large areas left blank, gives the scene an airy, unfinished, dreamlike quality.
