About this work
An ornate wrought-iron railing with circular and quatrefoil motifs fills the foreground. Beyond it a narrow canal recedes between a tall dark tree on the left and a row of ochre, brick-red and pale buildings with arched doorways on the right, closed at the far end by another low bridge. No figures appear in the scene.
Layered strands of oil pastel build the color in fine parallel strokes, most visible in the tree's dense green and the glowing pale-yellow sky. Warm ochres and rust tones on the facades contrast with the cool blue-white of the railing, creating a soft, hazy glow overall. The linear texture and gentle light give the view a quiet, dreamy stillness.
