About this work
A dense group of pointed spires and steep gabled roofs crowds the composition, their silhouettes doubled below as if reflected in dark water. No ground, sky horizon or figures anchor the scene; the vertical shapes simply rise and repeat across the canvas, warm on the right and cooler toward the left edge.
Thick knife-applied paint builds a rugged surface of bronze, brown and gold on the right, shifting to violet-blue on the left. The strong warm-cool contrast and dense, encrusted texture give the spires a brooding, dramatic presence, half architecture and half abstract pattern.
