Mitavsky lane

A tall building with arched windows, decorative cornices and a rounded pediment fills most of the composition, its facade rising steeply from a dark street below. Faint pale lights appear in some lower windows, while a sliver of paler sky shows at the upper right, suggesting a narrow street seen after dark.

The scene is painted almost entirely in deep blue-grey, brown and black, with thick strokes of ochre and white picking out window frames and cornices. The heavy, dragged brushwork and near-absence of a clear light source give the facade a brooding weight, creating a tense, nocturnal atmosphere.
