About this work
A vast horned creature covered in leopard-like spots surfaces from a heaving green sea, its body branching into multiple long necks that end in gaping, fanged mouths. Clawed limbs break the water's surface around it, while a small robed figure stands alone on a strip of sandy shore at lower left, arms raised toward the beast.
Layered washes of teal, olive and ochre build the rolling waves in overlapping curved strokes, with darker ink hatching defining the creature's scaled hide and teeth. A pale sunset band at the horizon and tiny distant ships add scale, while the monster's size and the figure's isolation create a foreboding, mysterious atmosphere.
