About this work
Two small boats are moored side by side, seen from a raised vantage point across a diagonal wooden rail or gangway in the foreground. Their white cabins, portholes and railings are picked out in quick detail, while their hulls dip down into dark water that fills the lower half of the sheet with rippling reflections.
The pastel is worked loosely, with blue-grey and white strokes describing the boats' hulls and cabins against the pale, largely bare paper of the sky, while the water is built from dense black, brown and blue marks with flecks of orange catching the light. Sketchy, unfinished passages around the edges keep the focus on the boats themselves. The contrast between spare background and dense dark water gives the piece a quiet, working-harbor atmosphere.
