About this work
Several figures dressed in black are grouped in a row, bending and leaning at the barre or floor, their limbs stretched out in overlapping diagonal poses. Behind them faint vertical lines and pale washes suggest a rehearsal space, while at far left a solitary figure watches, half turned away from the group.
Blacks and charcoal greys are laid in broad, dragged strokes against a cool, pale blue-white ground, with small flecks of pink and yellow breaking the monochrome. The forms are painted loosely, almost dissolving at the edges, so the dancers read as movement rather than individual likeness. The effect is fluid and quietly energetic.
