About this work
Several white-and-black birch trunks rise close to the picture plane, their bark rendered in quick dabs of grey and cream, standing on an unbroken blanket of snow. Behind them a dense screen of thinner trees in warm rust and brown fills the background, while a small evergreen sapling pokes through the snow at right.
Bright, cool daylight falls across the scene, casting long blue-grey shadows and soft footprint hollows across the foreground snow. The brushwork is direct and textured, with thick strokes for the snow and finer, scratchy marks for bark and twigs, giving the grove a crisp, sunlit clarity.
