About this work
A line of tall, slender birches with golden-leafed crowns stands across the foreground, their pale trunks catching the light. Behind them a broad hillside rises toward a low ridge, its surface mottled in patches of pink, violet, green and ochre, with a soft band of blue-grey sky and loose clouds above.
Loose, blended brushwork softens every edge, and the cool violets and greens of the hill play against the warm gold of the birch leaves and pale bark. Light is diffuse and even, giving the whole scene a tranquil, late-season stillness.
