About this work
A dancer stands turned slightly away from the viewer, both arms lifted above her head as her hands touch her hair. Her pale torso and arms catch the light while a patterned, shimmering bodice in mauve and pink tones covers her chest. The figure emerges from an almost entirely dark surrounding, with only faint dark ribbons or fabric trailing near her feet.
Deep blacks, plum, and charcoal grays dominate the canvas, against which the illuminated skin and hair stand out sharply. Paint is worked in soft, blended passes on the figure and rougher, dragged strokes in the shadows, creating a strong contrast of light and dark. The dramatic, low light gives the scene a hushed, evening intimacy.
