About this work
A seated figure, bare above the waist and wrapped from the hips down in heavy ochre drapery, presses a length of dark cloth against the mouth and chin with both hands. The knees are drawn up, the dark-haired head bent slightly forward, and the eyes stare out wide and fixed. A small clay jug and stones rest on the ground to the side.
The figure emerges from a mottled grey-blue ground built with broad, scumbled strokes, the skin painted in pale, cool tones against the warm gold of the drapery. Light falls from above onto the face and hands, leaving the lower body in shadow, and the rough, restless brushwork lends the pose an anxious, cornered tension.
