About this work
Dense, roiling storm clouds fill most of the composition, pressing down in dark grey and black masses toward a thin band of deep blue sky at the horizon. Below stretches a wide, pale expanse of storm-lit water, broken only by two small boats in the distance. A weathered wooden hut with a lit window sits on dark rocky ground at the left, while a seagull perches among boulders and driftwood in the foreground.
The palette narrows to near-monochrome contrasts of black, white, and deep navy, painted in broad, sweeping strokes that convey the clouds' churning motion. Hard silhouettes of the hut and rocks anchor the scene against the luminous ice, giving the whole a tense, brooding atmosphere.
