Autumn snow

A broad, still river curves through the foreground, bordered by low banks streaked with patches of lingering snow. Behind the banks, a dense line of trees in mixed autumn color, green, gold, and rust, rises against a pale, overcast sky. Clumps of grass and reeds mark the water's edge at the lower right.

Countless small, stippled strokes build the foliage and grassy banks with a fine, granular texture, while the river is painted in smoother, muted grey-violet tones. The cool light and heavy clouds mute the autumn colors, and the surviving snow patches add a chill note to the scene. The result is a subdued, transitional landscape between seasons.
