About this work
A flowering apple tree spreads across most of the canvas, its branches covered in clusters of white and pale pink blossoms mixed with young green leaves. Behind it, a plain wooden fence or shed roofline crosses the horizon, and a strip of grass and dry undergrowth runs along the base of the tree.
The sky is built from short, choppy strokes of blue, violet and grey, echoing the broken brushwork used for the blossoms and foliage. Warm ochre and pink accents in the flowers stand out against the cooler background, giving the impressionistic surface a sunlit, breezy freshness typical of a spring orchard.
