About this work
Below a band of turbulent clouds and a green field with wind-bent trees, a tightly packed group of figures fills the foreground: an older bearded man, a bespectacled man, a woman tilting her head back with parted lips, and others crowded shoulder to shoulder, their gazes directed in different directions.
Heavy impasto strokes model the sky and field in teal, ochre and rust, while the faces below are built with thicker, more agitated marks of flesh tone and shadow. The unsettled brushwork and crowding of figures produce a tense, uneasy mood.
