About this work
A dancer in a pale blue costume marked with pink diagonal cutouts and a white cap stands en pointe at the center of a ring of nude, brick-red figures holding hands and circling around her. The whole group is set on a flat green mound against a solid blue ground, enclosed within a circular medallion whose corners are filled with raised gold ornament.
Bold, flat color areas in ultramarine, red and green, outlined in dark contour lines, echo the simplified forms of Matisse's round dance, while the gilded decorative border frames the scene like an icon or medallion. The rhythmic circle of linked bodies and saturated color give the composition a vibrant, playful energy.
