About this work
A man's head is shown bowed and turned slightly, long dark hair falling past his shoulders and a woven crown of thorns pressing into his brow. His eyes are lowered and his expression withdrawn; a pale garment is just visible at the lower edge, the rest of the figure lost in shadow.
The paint is built up in thick, ridged strokes of ochre, umber and dull red over a near-black ground streaked with olive green, giving the surface a rough, sculptural quality. Light falls unevenly across the face, catching the cheekbone and brow while the hair and background dissolve into darkness, producing a subdued, sorrowful mood.
