About this work
Three women in patterned tunics and beaded headbands stand in a row across the top, each holding an attribute — thread, a raised needle, a knife — against a swirling red and teal ground. Below them a man kneels hunched over an open laptop, absorbed in typing, isolated against the same coiling red field, with a dark animal-like shape looming to his left.
Bold, saturated red, emerald and cobalt are laid on in thick, expressive strokes, with visible cracking and rough scratched outlines defining the figures. The women's faces are more finished than the loosely brushed man below, heightening the sense of distant, fateful figures watching an absorbed modern one. The mood is tense and dramatic, charged with unresolved confrontation.
