About this work

A sculpted plaster head of a classical female figure rests on a plinth, its white drape billowing as if caught by a sudden gust. Autumn leaves drift past the bust, a candle burns in a brass holder nearby, and a handwritten note in cursive is pinned to the wall behind, crossed by a diagonal shadow of window light.

Rendered with sharp, near-photographic precision, the scene sets cool greenish shadow against warm lamplight on stone and flame. Every fold of cloth, vein of leaf and crack of plaster is picked out in fine detail, and the impossible indoor wind lends the still life a quietly surreal, elegiac mood.
