About this work
Two shuttered windows are set into a log-cabin wall, each pane filled with black-and-white photographic portraits: young soldiers in uniform, an older man in a suit with medals, and a group of relatives crowd the panes like faces pressed to glass. Below, on a wooden table, a cast-iron treadle sewing machine and a heavy old flatiron sit tangled among bare, twisted tree roots.
The weathered wood is painted in cool greys and blues with fine grain detail, while the photographs are rendered in convincing monochrome, sharply set off from the muted setting. Warm ochre light falls across the tabletop objects, and the combination of realistic collage-like faces with a symbolic still life creates a melancholic, memory-laden atmosphere.
