About this work

On a windswept, grassy dune a black-and-white lighthouse rises against an almost black expanse of sea and sky, its lamp casting a pale beam sideways across the darkness. A small figure in white stands near the tower's base, seagulls wheel overhead, and at right a red-and-white windsock streams in the wind beside a life ring on a post.

Deep near-black tones behind the tower set off the warm gold and ochre grass, painted in thick, textured strokes, while the lighthouse and its beam are rendered with smoother precision. The stark tonal opposition between darkness and glowing grass, and the empty sea beyond, give the scene a solitary, windswept quiet.
